The following statement was issued by the Islamic Center of Nashville in response to the burning of a mosque in Columbia, Tenn., on Saturday:

The Muslim Community of Greater Nashville and Middle TN expresses their deep sadness and sorrow over the burning of the Islamic Center of Columbia, TN, which took place in the early hours of Saturday morning, February the 9th. Attacks on places of worship, the use of Swastikas and statements such as “White Power” and “We Run the World,” which were painted on the walls of the mosque, are considered a federal offense and promote racism.

The Muslim community would like to extend its sincere thanks and appreciation to the local community, Churches and the Jewish Federation of Nashville for the overwhelming support, and to the local authorities for their swiftness and professionalism in dealing with this hate crime. The burning of the mosque in Columbia was a direct result of hate and ignorance and much work is needed in the area of education to promote awareness and religious tolerance. We invite the local community and people of all faiths to join us in prayer on site on Saturday Feb. 16th at 1 p.m., at 1317 S. Main St, Columbia, TN 38401.
