Former USF professor Sami Al-Arian has begun his third hunger strike to protest “continued government harassment,” according to the Tampa Bay Coalition for Justice and Peace.

The group announced the hunger strike hours after Al-Arian was told he would be called to testify before a grand jury weeks before his scheduled release date.

His attorneys claim the government is trying to “ensnare him in a perjury trap.”

Al-Arian was sentenced in May of 2006 to 57 months in prison under a plea agreement in which he admitted to conspiracy to help people associated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
