Barbara Hughes has spent years gathering Hampton Roads faith leaders to discuss their similarities and plot ways to mend differences.

Hughes will spread the concept of unity among these divergent faiths as the new liaison to the Jewish and Muslim communities, under the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. She was named to the post in October.

Hughes, of Norfolk, will encourage multi-faith discussion groups aimed at strengthening all three denominations in a region stretching across southern and central Virginia, and organize a leadership council to brainstorm other ways to link the faiths at the congregational level.

The Reverend Raymond Barton with the Diocese says past liaisons primarily maintained good vibes between state-level faith leaders as part of a longtime denominational mandate. He says they wanted to expand the position to include reaching the average churchgoer with a message of tolerance.
