Religious schools are a huge part of American education. In fact, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has the biggest school system in our area. But other faiths have schools as well.

Local 12 Reporter Jeff Hirsh introduces us to a brand-new teacher at an Islamic school, who just happens to be Christian.

This is not the middle east. It’s the middle west, Butler County … the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati … and today, it’s the first day of school.

“Praised be to Allah, the cherished sustainer of the world.”

The school here, the International Academy, has 140 muslim students through grade 8.

“We’re first and second generation immigrant families and we do want to retain our Islamic beliefs and practices.”

For kindergarteners … this truly is the first day.

“Good morning, how are you?”

It’s also the first day for their teacher.

“This morning it was, what is going to happen…ha ha.”

Katie Monich grew up in Wyoming and is a 2008 graduate of Miami University.

“Coming into this job at the International Academy, I’d never known someone who was Muslim before.”
