The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is issuing an urgent call to action for every American citizen to voice their opposition to any U.S. House bill allocating unconditional military aid to Israel. This call comes amidst heightened concerns over the congressional allocation of U.S. taxpayer dollars for Israel’s ongoing war crimes and human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank.
Despite U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson’s public rejection of the Senate’s recently adopted $14 billion genocide aid package to Israel, the House, under his leadership, is now poised to consider an alternative aid package in the coming weeks. Notably, Speaker Johnson’s previous attempt to pass a $17.6 billion unconditional aid package, devoid of any conditions on military aid to Israel, failed to gain traction.
CAIR emphasizes the urgent need for continued education and pressure on Congress to halt any further U.S. funding or complicity in Israel’s genocide, which has resulted in the murder of over 29,000 Palestinians in Gaza, in addition to several Americans recently killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces and settlers.
The Threat of a Discharge Petition? With Democrats holding 213 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, there is also the potential for five or more disaffected Republicans to collaborate with Democrats to achieve the necessary 218 votes needed to initiate a procedural discharge petition, potentially circumventing Speaker Johnson’s block on considering the Senate’s adopted aid package.
Individual action is paramount at this critical juncture. By contacting your U.S. Representatives, concerned citizens can demand accountability in the allocation of taxpayer funds, contributing to efforts toward justice and human rights for all, including Palestinians affected by U.S.-funded violence and Israeli oppression.
