The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned President Trump’s demand that “everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran,” and said the president is repeating the same lies and mistakes that led George W. Bush to the disastrous invasion of Iraq.
In a statement, CAIR said:
“President Trump is repeating the same mistakes of President George W. Bush. Just like Iraq did not have and was not pursuing weapons of mass destruction, Iran does not have and was not pursuing a nuclear weapon. Everyone knows this, and Trump’s own Director of National Intelligence just reaffirmed it to Congress.
“President Trump could have easily signed a new deal with Iran limiting it to low, civilian-use levels of enrichment and extreme monitoring that would have made pursuing a weapon impossible. Instead, under pressure from Netanyahu and pro-Israel war mongers, Trump insisted on the poison pill ‘zero enrichment’ requirement that Iran was never going to accept.
“If President Trump wants to go along with Netanyahu’s efforts to pull the U.S. into a regime change war in Iran, he should just openly say so. But stop pretending this is about nuclear weapons.
“By providing Israel with the weapons and support to launch these attacks, the Trump administration is provoking an unnecessary war that the American people do not support.”
In a post on X, (formerly Twitter) CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad wrote: “Mr. President, Don’t let Netanyahu fool you and drag America into another war. You know his record—deceptive, self-serving, and reckless with American lives. Don’t repeat the mistakes of past presidents who sacrificed America’s sons and daughters for Israel.”
Earlier today, CAIR welcomed the introduction of a joint resolution (S.J.Res.68) by Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) to prevent the Trump administration from involving U.S. armed forces in a war with Iran that Congress has not authorized.
CAIR supports peaceful solutions to international conflict and urges Congress to continue reining in unchecked executive war powers and prioritizing the safety of American service members, civilians abroad, and the broader cause of global peace and justice.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
