BREAKING: CAIR-NY Condemns Quran Desecration Outside Turkish House

(NEW YORK, NY, 9/9/2023) – The New York chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned the reported desecration of a Quran, Islam’s revealed text, outside the Turkish House, which houses Türkiye’s consulate general and UN mission.

A person reportedly threw a copy of the Quran to the ground and kicked it outside of the Turkish House Friday morning. Turkish House security personnel removed the person from the premises.

There have been a number of Quran desecration incidents worldwide in recent months. In July, CAIR encouraged President Biden and Sweden’s prime minister to clearly disavow anti-Muslim bigotry and condemn a Quran burning that took place in that nation.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:

“We condemn this apparent attempt to desecrate the Quran – a sacred text followed by millions of Americans – and ask religious and political leaders of all faiths and backgrounds to stand with the American Muslim community in repudiation of the growing bigotry and division we are witnessing nationwide.”

Nasher noted CAIR-NY has condemned several disturbing bias-motivated incidents targeting minority communities in recent weeks, including an anti-Asian hate crime that reportedly took place in Brooklyn.

She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging white supremacy, anti-Jewish hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.
