(SEATTLE, WA, 12/2/2021) – The Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Washington) tonight released surveillance video obtained from the Islamic Center of Olympia dated November 23rd shows a car driving up, tossing an explosive device on the ground in front of the mosque and speeding away seconds before an explosion occurs.

CAIR-WA: Gathering set for Islamic Center of Olympia after center targeted by explosive, group says
Neighbors said the blast was strong enough to be heard up to two miles away. No one was hurt and there was no property damage.
“The Islamic Center is situated within a development that is home to 40 homes and families,” the statement reads. “A majority of them Cambodian Muslim refugees from the Pol-Pot/Khmer-Rouge era, many still vividly aware of their traumatic past of late 70’s and 80’s when they landed here. They are now in their 3rd or 4th generation and consider the mosque their spiritual center and attend prayers there five times a day.”
Imraan Siddiqi, the Executive Director at CAIR Washington, said this attack is yet another in a recent string of attacks on houses of worship:
“This is now the third mosque attack in the past two months in Washington state,” Siddiqi said. “Add this to the fact that members of the Olympia Muslim community have experienced various hate incidents over recent years – this gives the community a sense of concern as to the pattern that is taking place. We call on law enforcement to investigate this incident thoroughly and find the perpetrator.”
This attack comes as Rep. Ilhan Omar, who is Muslim, is in the news for being the target of Islamophobic attacks from fellow congressmembers.
CAIR Washington has responded to other recent incidents targeting mosques in that state.

CAIR urges houses of worship to take extra security precautions using its “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety” booklet. The advice in CAIR’s security publication is applicable to religious institutions of all faiths.
