CAIR Action Alert: Former ICE Director Who Accepted Award from Anti-Muslim Hate Group Should Not Be Considered to Head DHS

As acting ICE director, Thomas Homan refused to condemn Trump administration policy of separating families at the border.

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/14/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on all Americans to call on their state’s senators to speak out against the possible nomination of Thomas Homan as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

According to reports, President Trump decided to replace current DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, although the decision has not yet been made official. Trump is reportedly considering Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), for the position.

CAIR is calling on all Americans of conscience to urge members of the Senate to oppose Homan’s nomination by taking part in its click-and-send action alert.

“Mr. Homan’s track record of associating with an anti-Muslim hate group and acquiescing to family separation sends a clear message that bigotry is acceptable by top officials in the current administration and indicates that he would be unwilling to protect the rights of all Americans as the secretary of Homeland Security,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We urge the Senate to speak out against his possible nomination.”

While acting director of ICE, Homan refused to condemn the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from their parents at the border, instead claiming that his agency was simply enforcing the law. He also suggested that politicians who oversee sanctuary cities should be charged with “crimes.”

In September, Homan attended and accepted an award at a conference sponsored by the notorious anti-Muslim hate group, ACT for America. CAIR decried Homan’s appearance at the anti-Muslim hate event.

Founded by Brigitte Gabriel, ACT for America is an anti-Muslim hate group with growing ties to white supremacist, neo-Nazi hate organizations. Last year, ACT For America organized widely-condemned anti-Islam rallies nationwide.

Call Script: Suggested Message to U.S. Senators

“Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I am calling to urge Senator [NAME OF SENATOR] to “OPPOSE” and “VOTE NO” on the confirmation of Thomas Homan due to his association with an anti-Muslim hate group and his views on separation of children at the border.

Homan serving as Secretary of Homeland Security would send a message that anti-Muslim bigotry is acceptable policy in this administration and that American Muslims are not welcome members of our community. I am concerned that Homan is unable to serve the interests of all Americans and I ask again that you oppose his nomination. Thank you.”

If you have difficulty reaching senate offices using these numbers, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be transferred.
