The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is calling on all Americans to call on their members of Congress to support Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s resolution recognizing the ongoing Nakba and support for Palestinian refugee rights.
The resolution was introduced ahead of the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, the Arabic word for “catastrophe,” which refers to the mass displacement, ethnic cleansing, and dispossession of Palestinians beginning in 1948 during the establishment of the State of Israel. More than 750,000 Palestinians were expelled or forced to flee their homes, hundreds of villages were destroyed, and generations of Palestinian families became refugees.
For Palestinians, the Nakba is not only a historical event but an ongoing reality continuing today through war, military occupation, settlement expansion, forced displacement, home demolitions, and the destruction of civilian life in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Department Director Robert S. McCaw said:
“For 78 years, Palestinians have endured exile, dispossession, and erasure while the world looked away. As Gaza burns and families are wiped from existence, more and more members of Congress are recognizing that Nakba can no longer be ignored or continue enabling the suffering and displacement of the Palestinian people. We urge every American to call on their members of Congress to demand support for this historic resolution.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
