The Alabama office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today reiterated the Alabama Muslim community’s invitation to Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) to visit a mosque and engage with his Muslim constituents after he delivered a speech on the floor of the Senate denigrating Islam and smearing American Muslims while displaying a “BAN SHARIA LAW” poster.
CAIR said Sen Tuberville’s offensive and inaccurate remarks reveal his ignorance of Islam and the American Muslim community and were designed as a distraction from Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.
In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Mitchell said:
“Part of the reason that Senator Tuberville continues to express such dangerous hatred against American Muslims and utter ignorance about Islam is his refusal to accept the Alabama Muslim community’s months-old invitation to visit a Birmingham mosque, learn about his American Muslim constituents, and ask any questions on his mind. The other problem is that Senator Tuberville has fallen for attempts by the Israeli government and its supporters to whip up anti-Muslim hysteria to distract the American public, especially political conservatives, from the genocide in Gaza.
“If Senator Tuberville ever takes up the community’s offer to visit an Alabama mosque, he will learn that Alabama Muslims are following sharia—which means the way to water—when they pray five times a day, fast in Ramadan, give in charity, and follow the laws of the land in which they live. Senator Tuberville will also learn that American Muslims have consistently opposed all forms of unjust violence, from terrorist attacks by Al-Qaeda and ISIS, to the genocide perpetrated by Israeli government in Gaza. This is called moral consistency, and Senator Tuberville should try it.
In June, CAIR-AL Sen. Tuberville (R-AL) to visit a mosque in Alabama after comments that people from blue states coming are not welcome if they bring a “communist, Islamic atmosphere.”
In August, CAIR-AL called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate reported death threats targeting a Muslim candidate in that state as hate crimes.
Last year, CAIR called on law enforcement authorities to investigate an alleged threat to shoot up and bomb a mosque in Mobile, Alabama.
Earlier this year, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which reveals that Islamophobia continues to be at an all-time high across the country. CAIR said viewpoint discrimination against those speaking out against genocide and apartheid was a key factor in many cases.
