CAIR Applauds SCOTUS Decision Not to Review North Carolina’s Banning Confederate Flag on License Plates

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/12/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court not to review North Carolina’s ban on license plates with the Confederate flag.

The court declined to hear the case challenging North Carolina’s 2021 decision to stop issuing specialty license plates with the insignia of the North Carolina chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said in a statement:

“The Confederate flag has long been associated with a painful legacy of slavery, white supremacy and racism in our nation. Displaying such a symbol on state-issued license plates sends a distressing message to African-Americans and other marginalized groups. We applaud the court’s decision and hope it reflects an acknowledgment of the harm caused by Confederate symbols and the importance of addressing historical injustices.”

He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
