(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/7/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today backed community efforts to change a street name in Alexandria, Va., which currently honors a Confederate general.
Signs have appeared in the community demanding that “Pickett Street,” named after Confederate Major General George E. Pickett, be renamed.
Pickett’s Change: New signs call for renaming of Confederate-honoring street
In May, CAIR welcomed measures taken by the city of Alexandria to rename streets currently named for Confederate military and political figures. The city has put a process in place to rename streets named for Confederate historical figures and passed a new budget including funding for the process.
“We support this grassroots effort to urge public officials to act so that a traitor to our nation who sought to defend slavery and white supremacy is no longer honored with a street name,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
Hooper noted that CAIR recently backed a call by the NAACP to remove a Confederate monument in Virginia that refers to the Confederacy as a “noble cause.”
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
