(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/8/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed measures taken by the city of Alexandria, Va., to rename streets currently named for Confederate military and political figures.
The city has put a process in place to rename streets named for Confederate historical figures and passed a new budget including funding for the process.

“We welcome efforts by the city of Alexandria to end the honoring of racist traitors in its public spaces and urge other cities nationwide to follow suit,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that last month, CAIR welcomed plans to rename Virginia’s Fort Lee, which had been named for Confederate military commander Robert E. Lee.
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
