(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/25/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed plans to rename Virginia’s Fort Lee.
The fort, which had been named for Confederate military commander Robert E. Lee, will be officially renamed Fort Gregg-Adams on Thursday for two Black officers who made significant contributions to the army.

“American military bases should not be named after the commanders of an army that fought against the United States in order to maintain slavery,” said CAIR National Communications Manager Ismail Allison. “We welcome this change.”
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
