(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/24/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today repeated its call for the elimination of the Confederate Memorial Day holiday in Alabama.

“It is unconscionable that in 2023, an American state would honor traitors to our nation who defended slavery and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “This embarrassment of a holiday must be eliminated and replaced with one that instead honors those who fought for equality and justice.”
He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called on Alabama to drop the holiday.

Earlier this month, CAIR similarly condemned Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves’ decision to sign a proclamation naming April as Confederate Heritage Month.
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
