CAIR Welcomes American Bar Association Resolution Stating Confederate Monuments Should be Removed from Courthouses

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/7/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a resolution by the American Bar Association (ABA) saying that Confederate monuments should be removed from courthouses nationwide.

In a resolution passed Monday, the ABA House of Delegates said that Confederate memorabilia “and other symbols of racial and ethnic bias” should be removed from facilities where court proceedings are held.

“Symbols of injustice and white supremacy should not be present in or near institutions that should promote justice for all people in a diverse nation,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome this resolution by the American Bar Association and urge courthouses nationwide to follow their recommendation.” 

Hooper noted that CAIR has previously called for the removal of Confederate symbols from courthouses and jury rooms nationwide.

He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
