(BALTIMORE, MD, 1/30/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Maryland’s Montgomery County GOP to drop a speaker for a class on that state’s Constitution by a man with alleged ties to a white supremacist, neo-Confederate organization.
That speaker for the class that begins this week, Pastor David Whitney, reportedly has past ties to the League of the South, which has been classified as a white supremacist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Whitney is an instructor at the Institute of the Constitution and has been a member and served as chaplain of the Maryland chapter of the League of the South.
A representative of Montgomery County GOP said Whitney’s ties to the League of the South are “old and obsolete.”

“We urge the Montgomery County GOP to replace the scheduled speaker with one who will recognize and respect our state’s diverse population,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “We all have a duty to promote mutual respect and inclusion, not bigotry and division.”
Chaudry noted that CAIR has condemned recent hate incidents in Maryland.
She said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
