(WASHINGTON D.C., 11/30/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded the city council of Swansea, S.C., for voting to replace Confederate Memorial Day with the Juneteenth holiday on the town’s list of official 2023 holidays.

Earlier this year, CAIR reiterated its support for a bill that would end South Carolina’s Confederate Memorial Day. South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi as the only states that mark Confederate Memorial Day with a full state holiday.
“We applaud the action of Swansea’s Town Council to cease honoring traitors to our nation and instead celebrate freedom from the enslavement those traitors sought to defend,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “This principled stance should be replicated statewide and in those states that continue to honor treason and white supremacy.”
He noted that Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
