CAIR-Arizona Welcomes Removal of Racist Housing Rules in Tucson Neighborhood

The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the removal of racist rules on property in a Tucson neighborhood.

That Vista del Monte neighborhood removed an unenforceable (because of the Fair Housing Act of 1968) covenant restricting people who are African-American living there.

“We welcome the removal of this sad remnant of the history of racism in our nation and urge towns and cities in our state and nationwide to remove all similar racist covenants,” said CAIR-AZ Executive Director Azza Abuseif. “Although these racist provisions are no longer enforceable, their presence continues to convey a harmful message to minority communities and must be eradicated.”

She noted that CAIR has welcomed the removal of similar racist covenants in a number of other states.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
