The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today asked Las Vegas, Nevada, Mayor Shelley Berkley to apologize for calling anti-genocide protesters “pieces of garbage.”
Mayor Berkley reportedly made those remarks, referring to pro-Palestinian protesters at UNLV, during an event organized by the Israeli-American Council.
In a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“It is deeply disturbing and disgusting that the mayor of Las Vegas would express such disdain for college students who have simply exercised their right to protest genocide. These protests are no different than when she was in college, and students were protesting apartheid in South Africa, the war in Vietnam, and segregation. These students have hearts, and they care when they see videos of Palestine children dying.”
Yesterday, CAIR condemned the latest Israeli massacre of children in Gaza.
Earlier this week, CAIR said the Biden administration, through its complicity with the Gaza genocide, is responsible for the so-called “line of corpses” Israeli forces maintain in Gaza in which anyone – including children – entering the zone is shot and their bodies left to be devoured by dogs.

Israel has slaughtered more 45,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
