CAIR Backs Rally in Support of Proposed South Carolina Hate Crime Bill

(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/26/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for a rally in favor of proposed hate crime legislation in South Carolina.

Community leaders and activists will gather outside the South Carolina Statehouse in Columbia to express support for the Clementa Pinckney Hate Crime Law on Thursday. This law, which is named for the state senator killed along with eight others by a neo-Nazi, white supremacist shooter at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, has resided in the state Senate since its passage by the house in April 2021.

South Carolina is one of two states in the U.S. without hate crime legislation.

“It is essential that every state be able to appropriately prosecute those who target others based on bigotry,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We urge South Carolina senators to support the Clementa Pinckney Hate Crime Law.”

He noted that CAIR previously expressed support for the law in January.

McCaw said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
