BACKGROUNDER:

The anti-violence campaign is a continuation of the efforts stemming from the gang summits held 30 years ago. Leaders of major “street organizations” that were a part of the National Peace and Justice Summit hosted in Kansas City in 1993 will now use their networks to enhance serious dialogue centered around ending loss of life and unprecedented violence due to handguns and assault weapons.

Identifying solutions to the devastating impact upon the victim, perpetrator, and community is an essential element in understanding what is needed to develop a treatment modality that can be shared by all stakeholders.

The campaign will support local community-based organizations, faith leaders and government officials in engaging “credible messengers” to address street violence. It will reach out to local celebrity rappers to change their message from violence to community development.

Additionally, the campaign will seek greater legal accountability for gun distributors and manufacturers regarding the sale of guns used in the commission of crimes.

It will culminate in Washington, D.C. in April 2023 with an assembly of national community leaders, celebrity rappers and government officials.
