(WASHINGTON D.C., 9/28/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for “appropriate disciplinary action” after student athletes from one team reportedly used racial slurs against their opponents at a youth soccer match in Vermont.
Over the weekend, the superintendent of Winooski schools, a district in which more than half of students are minorities, released a statement alleging that three opponents from the visiting Enosburg Falls High School soccer team targeted Winooski players with racial slurs including the n-word. A Winooski graduate who is now at college reported that Winooski soccer players have often been targeted with racist language at games.

“Racist harassment is unacceptable in any setting, and particularly harmful when it targets young people,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge officials to take appropriate disciplinary action against those involved and to enact updated, robust anti-racism policies to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.”
Hooper said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
