(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/6/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu’s signing of an order banning boycotts of Israel as “a total assault on our First Amendment rights.”
Gov. Sununu met with Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations and Israel’s consul general to New England today to sign the order, which bans boycotts of Israel in state procurement and investments.

In a statement, CAIR Senior Litigation Attorney Gadeir Abbas said:
“This order represents a total assault on our First Amendment rights. The government cannot tell Americans how to spend their money or who to financially support. Boycotts have been a part of American political life since the founding of our nation, and no state order attempting to ban or limit our right to boycott can be legitimate.”
He noted that CAIR has previously been successful in defeating legislation targeting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
