(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/30/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged members of the U.S. House of Representatives to support and co-sponsor the bipartisan Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act of 2023 (H.R. 3202).

SEE: H.R.3202 – 118th Congress (2023-2024): Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act of 2023
Championed by Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) and co-led by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Ranking Member Gregory Meeks (D-NY), alongside 28 other Republican and Democratic co-sponsors, this legislation represents a significant step forward in holding the Assad regime accountable for its egregious human rights violations and ongoing brutality against the Syrian people.
This critical legislation, which unanimously passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee, seeks to enhance sanctions outlined in the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019. The act aims to deter normalization and prevent any investment or economic support of the Assad regime. Assad is responsible for the deaths of more than half a million people in Syria, leading to the displacement of over half the Syrian population.
In a statement, CAIR Director of Government Affairs Department Robert S. McCaw said:
“We strongly urge members of Congress to support the Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act of 2023. This bipartisan legislation is a crucial tool in deterring the normalization of relations with the brutal Assad regime and preventing any economic support that prolongs its war crimes and human rights violations.
“The Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019 was a significant milestone in addressing the atrocities committed by the Assad regime. The Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act builds on that foundation by strengthening sanctions and sending a clear message that the United States will not tolerate engagement or investment that aids a regime responsible for countless human rights abuses.
“We commend Congressman Joe Wilson, Chairman Michael McCaul, and all the co-sponsors for their leadership in advancing this important legislation. Their commitment to bipartisan cooperation and their dedication to protecting human rights should be applauded.
“The Syrian people have suffered far too long under the Assad regime’s brutality, and it is time for the international community to stand united against these egregious violations.”
