The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Congress and the Trump administration to act following allegations that activists on a humanitarian aid flotilla to Gaza kidnapped in international waters by Israel were subjected to sexual assault, violence and rape while in detention.
In a statement, Washington, D.C., based CAIR said:
“These deeply disturbing allegations of sexual violence, assault and rape against humanitarian activists kidnapped by Israel in international waters demand an immediate, transparent and independent international investigation.
“No government should be permitted to act with impunity, especially when credible reports involve rape, sexual assault and abuse of civilians engaged in humanitarian efforts. Congress and the Trump administration must publicly condemn these alleged abuses and take concrete action to ensure accountability under international law.
“The international community cannot continue applying double standards when it comes to human rights violations. The reported mistreatment of detainees, combined with the ongoing genocide in Gaza, underscores the urgent need for international protection of civilians and unrestricted humanitarian access.”
Yesterday, CAIR’s New Jersey chapter confirmed the release of Nutley resident Amrou Ibrahim from Israeli custody after similar allegations of abuse by Israeli authorities.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
