(WASHINGTON D.C., 7/26/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Delaware’s Georgetown Town Council to drop funding for a local museum unless they remove a Confederate flag from its premises.
CAIR also condemned a decision by South Carolina’s Florence County Council to install a monument to a Confederate general.
Georgetown’s mayor and town council approved a request from the town’s Historical Society to fund the Marvel Carriage Museum, which added a Confederate monument in 2007 and flies the Confederate flag. The council added a memorandum of understanding that a committee will be formed to reach an agreement on the monument and flag.
The Florence County Council voted to install a statue of Confederate General William W. Harllee, the lieutenant governor of South Carolina at the time of its secession and one of the signers of the Ordinance of Secession. The motion states that the statue must be displayed at the county museum, despite a unanimous decision by the museum’s board of directors not to display it in 2018.
“Monuments and symbols honoring the treasonous, white supremacist Confederacy must not be displayed in public spaces and must not be maintained with public funds,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
