CAIR Calls on Maryland GOP, Gov. Hogan, County Council to Repudiate Councilman’s Islamophobic Posts, Hate-Filled Phone Rant

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/2/2018) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim advocacy and civil rights organization, today called on the Maryland Republican Party, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and members of the Anne Arundel County Council to repudiate a string of Islamophobic Facebook posts by a GOP council member in that county. CAIR is calling on the council member to resign.

Islamophobic messages on Councilman John Grasso’s Facebook page include a condemnation of Muslim immigration to the United States and posts stating, “Share if you think Trump should ban Islam in American schools” and “One nation under God, not Allah.”

Councilman Grasso is a candidate for Maryland State Senate and has been endorsed by Governor Larry Hogan.

This morning, Grasso called CAIR’s Maryland representative and reportedly went on an Islamophobic “rant” in which he claimed that Islam did not belong in America and expressed his support for Donald Trump’s call for a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States. He also endorsed vetting all Muslims because “they’re always blowing things up.”

“It is unconscionable that a public official whose job it is to serve a diverse community would hold such bigoted, Islamophobic and xenophobic views,” said CAIR Director of MD Outreach Zainab Chaudry. “While Councilman John Grasso has the right to his hate-filled views, other public officials and community leaders have a duty to speak out in defense of traditional American values of respect for diversity and mutual understanding.”

She called on Grasso to resign, urged Governor Hogan to repudiate Grasso’s comments in light of his endorsement and asked Maryland Republicans to reaffirm that their party does not approve such bigotry.

CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

On Wednesday, October 10, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, will hold a congressional briefing on “Anti-Muslim Bias in the Current Political Moment.”
