CAIR Calls on Maryland State Board of Elections to Probe Voter Registration Error Reported to Impact Thousands

Civil rights group urges board to issue public notice alerting voters of error, encourages double checking of districts after statewide redistricting changes take effect

(BALTIMORE, Md., 6/17/2022) – The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on the Maryland State Board of Elections to investigate an error causing thousands of Maryland voters to be registered in the wrong district.

CAIR also urged the board to issue a public notice to voters statewide asking them to confirm their voting districts after the redistricting of the state’s legislative districts took effect this year.

STEP 3: If these two districts match, your voter registration is fine. If they don’t match, contact the State Board of Elections to fix the error at (410) 269-2840.

In a statement, CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said:

“Maryland’s primary election is one month away, and voters deserve to know the integrity of our elections is being protected. We are concerned by the apparently downplaying of this matter by the Baltimore City Board of Elections, especially because some voters aren’t even aware of possible changes to their legislative districts after the new redistricting map came into effect this year. Every vote counts, even one erroneous ballot is one too many. We urge the local and state boards of election to take this matter seriously and act swiftly to protect voters’ rights to a fair election.”

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
