The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on U.S. and international medical groups to speak out after a new report outlines the far-right Israeli government’s torture of Palestinian healthcare workers in Gaza.
Describing its news report, Torture of Medical Workers in Israel, Israel-based Physicians for Human Rights, Israel (PHRI) stated in part:
“A new PHRI report unveils harrowing testimonies from detained medical workers. Abducted from their workplaces, held for months without charges, subjected to torture, sexual abuse, and denied medical care – these atrocities shake us to the core.
“From all the innumerable horrors that have taken place since the beginning of the war, this new PHRI report and testimonies, detailing evidence by detained medical workers, nevertheless shook us to the core. As doctors, seeing our colleagues abducted from their workplaces, detained for months without charges in subhuman conditions, cruelly tortured, sexually abused, and denied medical treatment, is something we cannot live with, and neither should any of us.”
In a statement, CAIR said:
“We urge all American and international medical organizations to speak out against the genocidal Israeli government’s systematic targeting and torture of Palestinian healthcare workers, which is just one aspect of its genocide in Gaza. It is the duty of all medical groups – and particularly American medical organizations – to defend their colleagues who are being tortured by a government backed by American taxpayer dollars.”
Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called on the American Medical Association (AMA) to condemn Israel’s attacks on medical facilities and personnel. Israel has killed more than 1,000 Palestinian health care workers and destroyed most of the medical infrastructure in Gaza.
Earlier this week, CAIR responded to a report published by Addameer on the Ofer Camp, an Israeli detention facility where Palestinian detainees were reportedly tortured and starved.
CAIR has repeatedly called for U.S and international action to stop Israel’s torture and abuse of Palestinian prisoners.
Earlier this month, CAIR renewed its demand for the release of a Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, who has reportedly been subjected to torture in Israeli custody.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
