CAIR Calls on Police to Reconsider Charges for Racist Rant Targeting Family Speaking Spanish in Virginia

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/23/2018) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on local law enforcement authorities to reconsider charges for a racist rant targeting a family speaking Spanish at a Lovettsville, Va., restaurant.

A woman was caught on video yelling obscenities and demanding to see passports of an unidentified family of Guatemalan tourists. “Go back to your f—— country. You do not f—— come over here and freeload on America,” the woman is heard yelling on the recently-surfaced footage. Local police declined to bring charges in the case.

“We condemn this blatant act of racism and urge law enforcement authorities to reconsider bringing charges against the alleged perpetrator,” said CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “The hate displayed by the woman caught on video is unfortunately representative of the bigotry experienced by members of many minority communities under the Trump administration.”

He noted that also today, CAIR’s Colorado chapter welcomed hate crime charges against a man who allegedly threatened to kill his “Middle Eastern” Uber driver in Colorado Springs.
