CAIR Condemns Alleged Racist Abuse Targeting Alabama HBCU Volleyball Team

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/16/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned alleged racist abuse targeting the women’s volleyball team of Talladega College, a historically Black university in Alabama.

A player on Talladega College’s women’s volleyball team was reportedly sent a racist image at the Southern States Athletic Conference’s (SSAC) volleyball awards banquet last week. The incident was condemned by the university and SSAC.

“We condemn this alleged racist abuse and urge all educational institutions to implement policies and programs to ensure that the targeting of students by bigots is not tolerated,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

Hooper added that said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
