CAIR Condemns Antisemitic Incidents in Louisiana, Virginia

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/10/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today condemned the hanging of an antisemitic banner over an overpass in Shreveport, La., and two incidents of antisemitic vandalism in Waynesboro, Va.

A banner featuring antisemitic language was hung on an overpass above Interstate 20 in Shreveport on Saturday. The banner was removed by a passing motorist. The incident comes following the distribution of antisemitic flyers in the area last month.

On Monday morning, Nazi swastikas were found spray-painted over a mural on the wall of the Waynesboro YMCA building and on a billboard along Route 340. The YMCA said that it has reported the incident to police and has talked with the artist about how to restore the mural.

“We condemn all acts promoting antisemitism and other forms of bigotry targeting minority communities,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Members of minority communities across our nation should be able to live free of intimidation, and all Americans must come together to repudiate hate.”

He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
