(WASHINGTON D.C., 8/8/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the decision of Delaware’s Georgetown Historical Society to continue flying the Confederate flag.
CAIR also repeated its call on the Sussex County Council to withdraw funding for the museum.
In a recent statement, the Georgetown Historical Society declared its intention to continue flying the Confederate flag. Sussex County Council member Mark Schaeffer reportedly plans to start a discussion at tomorrow’s council meeting on the possibility of the county asking for its recent $2,000 grant to the museum to be returned.
“An institution that has expressed its desire to continue flying a flag that symbolizes white supremacy, slavery and treason to our nation doesn’t deserve public funding,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge the county council to rescind funding for this museum for as long as they fly the Confederate flag.”
He noted that CAIR previously called on the council to rescind funding to the museum.
