(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/28/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an allegedly bias-motivated shooting attack on an Indian-American in Utah.
Police in Tooele, Utah, are investigating a pellet gun shooting as a potential hate crime. Gurvinder Singh said he was in front of his home on Saturday when a person in a pickup pulled up and reportedly said, ‘You should go back to your country,” then shot him in the ankle.

“The rising racism and xenophobia we are witnessing nationwide should be a cause of great concern to every American, regardless of their faith or background,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We hope law enforcement authorities conduct a swift and thorough investigation of this troubling incident and bring the alleged perpetrator to justice.”
He noted that yesterday, CAIR urged law enforcement authorities in Marion, Iowa, to consider bringing hate crime charges against suspects who allegedly targeted that community with racist slurs.
Also yesterday, Washington, D.C., based CAIR condemned alleged racist threats and violence targeting student athletes at a high school football game in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
