The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the latest Israeli murder of a journalist in Gaza.
Journalist Eman Al-Shanti and her family were reportedly killed in an Israeli attack on civilian targets in Gaza’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood.
Yesterday, CAIR said a new report by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) that the far-right Israeli government killed more than half (55) of the 104 media professionals killed worldwide this year is a “blatant attempt to cover up its genocide of the Palestinian people.”
Israel has slaughtered almost 45,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and has destroyed the civilian infrastructure and forcibly displaced the vast majority of the population, which now faces forced starvation as an Israeli tactic of ethnic cleansing.
In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“The world media have not been reluctant to condemn the murders of their colleagues or use the term ‘genocide’ when reporting on past cases of slaughter, mass destruction, forced starvation, and ethnic cleansing in other parts of the world. But it seems there is yet another ‘except for Palestine’ situation in which Israel’s brutal campaign of death and destruction targeting the Palestinian people is called a ‘war’ or ‘conflict,’ not what it really is – ‘genocide.’
“If the genocide is to end, the world community – which is witnessing it in real time online – American and international media outlets must begin reporting the truth and stop ‘explaining’ or excusing Israel’s brutality.”
Earlier this month, said the Biden administration must end arms shipments to Israel after a new report by Amnesty International, titled “You Feel Like You Are Subhuman’: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza,” concludes that Israel has committed – and still are committing – genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
Last month, CAIR applauded the International Criminal Court (ICC) decision to reject outside pressure and issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza genocide.
CAIR previously condemned the Israeli government’s targeting of journalists.
