CAIR Condemns Ruling Preventing Removal of North Carolina Confederate Monument

(WASHINGTON D.C., 9/13/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a court ruling that a Confederate monument in North Carolina must remain in place.

A superior court judge dismissed a lawsuit filed in 2021 by the NAACP demanding the removal of the Confederate monument in front of the Alamance County Historic Courthouse. That lawsuit said keeping the monument in a prominent place violates the state constitution by denying Black residents equal protection under the law and by promoting racism.

Alamance County commissioners say do not have the authority to move the monument under a controversial 2015 state law limiting the removal of “objects of remembrance.”

“No law should be misused to protect monuments to slavery and systemic anti-Black racism that continue to have a negative impact on the legal rights of minority communities through government-endorsed displays of white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

Earlier today, CAIR welcomed a resolution by the city council of Asheboro, N.C., in support of removing a Confederate monument currently located outside a courthouse.

CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
