(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/22/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a demonstration by a far-right group using white supremacist symbols at the Tennessee Capitol building.
Yesterday, members of the Proud Boys, a White supremacist group, gathered at the Tennessee capitol in Nashville during a prayer session preceding a legislative session. At that gathering, members of the hate group reportedly made an offensive hand gesture associated with white supremacy.
“Groups that promote white supremacy and racism should be repudiated by members of all communities in Tennessee and nationwide,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Extremists of all stripes must be shown that their bigoted views are rejected by the vast majority of Americans.”
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
