CAIR-CT to Join Senator Blumenthal to Explore Ways to Strengthen Hate Crime Laws

CAIR logo(HARTFORD, CT, 11/20/2016) – On Monday, November 21, the Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT) will join Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) at the State Capitol press conference during which he will announce ways to strengthen federal hate crime laws.

Sen. Blumenthal is responding to growing concerns among civil rights organizations, including CAIR-CT, that are questioning President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination and appointment of known Islamophobes, racists and anti-immigrant figures to key positions in the new administration.

“According to the FBI, hate crimes in this country jumped to record numbers during 2015, especially against Muslims, and we are encouraged by Senator Blumenthal’s leadership in exploring ways to strengthen federal laws to not only punish the perpetrators, but more importantly to deter others from committing these crimes in the first place,†said CAIR-CT Executive Director Mongi Dhaouadi. “It is extremely important that political, civil and religious leaders send a message from the constitutional state that we are united in defending all citizens, including minorities, who feel vulnerable under the Trump presidency,†added Farhan Memon, board chairman of CAIR-CT.
