CAIR-Dallas Seeks Probe of Bias Motive for Attempted Murder of Muslim Activist

DALLAS ATTACK NEW(DALLAS, TEXAS, 6/9/16) – The Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-DFW) today called on state law enforcement authorities and the FBI to investigate a bias motive for an alleged attempted murder of a Muslim activist by a man driving a vehicle displaying an anti-Muslim and extremist stickers who reportedly screamed racist slurs during the attack.

Omair Siddiqi, who works for CAIR-DFW as an outreach coordinator, reports that he was followed out of a Garland, Texas, gas station yesterday by a man driving a white pickup with “American Infidel” and “Three Percenters†stickers in the back window. (NOTE: Siddiqi was listening to a recording of the Quran, Islam's revealed text, as his pumped gas into his vehicle. The Three Percenters group is part of the anti-government extremist movement.)

[MEDIA ADVISORY: Omair Siddiqi will be available for media interviews at the CAIR-DFW office (2904 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas, 75204) at 5 p.m. today.]

The man driving the pickup reportedly pulled up next to Siddiqi’s vehicle and screamed, “Take your rag a** back to your country,” “f**k you” and “I'm gonna fu**ing kill you,” as he allegedly tried to run the Muslim activist off the road, almost causing him to crash into a light pole. Siddiqi took a photo of the alleged attacker’s truck as it sped away.

“Given the apparent extremist affiliations of the alleged attacker, and the racist slurs reportedly shouted during the attack, we urge local law enforcement authorities and the FBI to investigate this potentially deadly incident as a bias-motivated attempted murder,†said CAIR-DFW Executive Director Alia Salem.

Alia noted that earlier this year, CAIR-DFW welcomed the arrest of a man who allegedly carried out a deadly Christmas Eve shooting in which he reportedly targeted his victims because he believed they were Muslim.

She said incidents targeting American Muslims and their religious institutions have spiked in recent months, prompted at least in part by anti-Muslim rhetoric employed by public figures like Donald Trump.

CAIR recently called for a hate crime probe of a similar alleged vehicular attack on a Muslim woman in Tennessee.
