(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/14/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today echoed a call by the NAACP for the adoption of a hate crime bill in South Carolina following the burning of a cross outside a Black couple’s home.
Two people were arrested for allegedly burning a cross outside the home of their Black neighbors in Conway over the Thanksgiving weekend. The NAACP has launched an investigation and is calling on lawmakers in South Carolina to support the adoption of a hate crime bill. In the past three years, a hate crime bill has made it through the South Carolina State House but stalled on the Senate floor.

“This deeply disturbing incident demonstrates the need for hate crime legislation in South Carolina,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge lawmakers to take action to join the rest of the nation in passing such legislation.”
He noted that CAIR has previously expressed support for the proposed Clementa C. Pickney Hate Crime Law in South Carolina.
