CAIR-Florida Condemns White Supremacist Group’s Racist & Anti-Semitic Robocalls Targeting Florida’s Gubernatorial Candidate

(MIAMI, FL, 10/25/18) – The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the state’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a white supremacist group’s recent robocalls that targeted Florida gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum.

Media outlets reported that the calls featured a man impersonating Gillum “”¦in a minstrel dialect, while jungle sounds and chimpanzee noises can be heard in the background.” The media also highlighted that, “The ad takes an anti-Semitic turn with the speaker claiming that it was the Jews who owned the slave trade” and that “Jews will be putting Negros in charge over white folks.” This is the second of this type of call that was directed to the gubernatorial candidate and “paid for by”.

“CAIR-Florida strongly condemns the disgraceful racist and anti-Semitic robocalls. Unfortunately, these robocalls contribute to the highly prejudicial xenophobic political climate that frequently ends up in hate crimes affecting our communities. We reject this dangerous racist rhetoric as it shall have no place in political campaigns and electoral processes,” said Tyler Shortsleeves, a CAIR-Florida Law Clerk.

CAIR-Florida’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR-Florida es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, proteger las libertades civiles, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
