Aziz recounted feeling traumatized as NYPD officers photographed her in the presence of numerous male prisoners and police personnel. Attorneys from Emery Celli Brinckerhoff & Abady LLP and the Council on American-Islamic Relations New York Inc., representing the plaintiffs, detailed in the complaint that “for nearly 5 minutes, NYPD officers had been taking photographs of Ms. Aziz, her head and hair uncovered, from multiple angles.”

The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights organization, called on political leaders and university officials to stop “endangering” Jewish, Muslim, Palestinian and other students who conducting peaceful protests.

“Students should not have to risk their reputation, livelihoods or their safety to speak out against a genocide or their university’s complicity in genocide,” CAIR-NY’s Executive Director Afaf Nasher said in a statement.

CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid called for a rejection of messaging on the billboards.

“We condemn this deceptive campaign to honor one of history’s worst mass murderers and to promote racism and white supremacy,” Walid said in a statement Tuesday. “All Americans must reject the hatred and bigotry these billboards represent.”

In the council meeting, dozens held signs, most in favor of the project. Some said, “No to limits, yes to development.” Representatives of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations also attended the meeting in support.

CAIR-Texas: Grand jury indicts man accused of stabbing Palestinian-American with aggravated assault despite calls for hate crime charges – CNN

In a statement to CNN on Tuesday, CAIR said while they “welcome” the indictment, “the charges should have included a hate crime enhancement.”

“If shouting racial slurs at a group of Palestinian-Americans and ripping the Palestinian flagpole off their car before stabbing one of them is not a hate crime, then nothing is a hate crime,” CAIR said. “We encourage federal law enforcement to investigate this attack and consider hate crime charges.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also criticized the use of police force to stifle dissent, saying it undermined freedom of speech.

“So does defaming and endangering Jewish, Muslim and Palestinian … students based on suspiciously inflammatory remarks that a few unidentified, masked individuals have made outside of campus,” Afaf Nasher, executive director of CAIR in New York, said in a statement.
