“Our latest survey reveals that American Muslim voters are highly engaged in the upcoming presidential election, open to supporting a diverse range of candidates and political parties, and deeply dissatisfied with the current state of the nation, particularly US support for the war on Gaza,” CAIR’s national executive director Nihad Awad said in a public statement.

The lawsuit, filed by CAIR’s Legal Defense Fund and its Greater Los Angeles area office, challenges the constitutionality of the alleged watchlist and accuses the government of violating the rights of two Palestinian-American plaintiffs.
“The lawsuit alleges that the Government has violated the Constitution by placing the two plaintiffs on secret watchlists for their protected and lawful speech and activity in favor of Palestine,” Amr Shabaik, CAIR’s legal director told Anadolu.

“It was very clear who this bill was targeting,” Leena Sabagh, a policy manager with the Council on Islamic-American Relations, told the Intercept. Free speech organizations are still alarmed by the amended bill: the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in California has said that it will “set a dangerous precedent of chilling speech on campuses across the state.”
