“This comes after many failed attempts to meet with (CWRU) President Kaler about the unfair treatment and targeting of the university’s Palestinian students and allies,” CAIR-Ohio Executive Director Faten Husni Odeh said in a statement. “Instead of fostering an inclusive and welcoming learning environment, the leadership of Case Western Reserve University created an openly hostile atmosphere for students standing up against brutality and genocide. Had the administration been more interested in its students rather than an oppressive and violent foreign regime, we could’ve avoided this action.”

“I’ve personally seen roughly 30 complaints come in just to our office of Muslim women who had their hijab taken off in some capacity by a prison or police officer, and almost 10 of whom had that photo go public online,” said Aya Beydoun, a legal fellow for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Her organization has represented — and sued on behalf — of incarcerated Muslim women across the country.

Superintendent of Schools Edward Aldarelli called for a “thorough investigation” after being made aware of the alleged incident by the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) a Newark-based group that works to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice and empower American Muslims.

“As the superintendent of Edison Township Public Schools, I want to reassure our community that we are taking this matter seriously. The district is immediately reviewing the allegation raised by CAIR-NJ, and we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation,” Aldarelli said in an email statement, adding that due to the confidential nature of personnel matters, the district cannot publicly discuss any details or actions.

Robert McCaw, director of government affairs at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) agreed. “It is crucial for our community to unlock our power. There are more than 2.2 million registered Muslim voters in this country. Now there are 250 elected Muslim officials in local, state, federal and judicial seats. This demonstrates that our neighbors trust Muslims to represent them…There is no such thing as a Black, Hispanic issue that isn’t also a Muslim issue,” so coalition building is vital, McCaw said. “We have 2,700 mosques in the U.S. as well as countless Muslim charities, nonprofits, community centers and schools. Muslim Americans give billions in foreign aid,” McCaw said, urging Muslims to also donate to Emgage PAC, the Muslim American bi-partisan political action committee, and support JETPAC, which trains American Muslims who wish to run for elected office.

“Having enabled the wholesale destruction of civilian infrastructure and medical facilities in Gaza, the Biden administration has a duty to ensure that polio vaccines reach all those who need to be vaccinated,” said CAIR communications director Ibrahim Hooper in a statement Sunday.

“This is only possible with an immediate and permanent ceasefire to both stop the genocide and prevent the outbreak of polio and other diseases,” Hooper went on. “The suffering of the Palestinian people must come to an end.”
