“The urgency of this moment can’t be overstated. Innocent lives deserved to be protected and valued, regardless of whether they are Israeli or Palestinian,” said Zainab Chaudry, Maryland Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), during the bill’s hearing on Monday. “A ceasefire yesterday would have protected the lives of hundreds of innocent people who are being killed today. A ceasefire today would protect hundreds of innocent lives tomorrow.”

More than 40 imams and representatives of groups who signed the letter, including Houston chapters of national nonprofits such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Indian American Muslim Council, told organizers that allowing Whitmire, city leaders, and Israeli diplomats to participate in the event without their calls for a cease-fire “sends a troubling message” to the city’s Muslim community and “undermines reconciliation efforts.” If things continue as they are, the group said it will “be pulling all support and backing” from next week’s event.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, which bills itself as the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, also condemned a the protester and his message.
“Public support for neo-Nazi ideology, particularly by an individual who was reportedly armed, is designed to intimidate minority communities,” CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said. “Such displays of hate must be repudiated by all Americans who value mutual respect and inclusion in our society.”
