“The amount of aid that we send to Israel is unprecedented,” said Samar Ismail of the San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “We should really be focusing on our American citizens and making sure we have proper infrastructure, proper health care, making sure we have enough money in the United States for emergencies we’re seeing right now,” such as the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in the Southeast.

Students face more restrictions on their speech and activity this fall, said Zahra Billoo, executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

“It appeared as though university administration had spent the summer thinking, ‘How do we deal with future advocacy or ongoing advocacy by students?’ And so there are questions about … what it means for college environments to be quashing debate and protests rather than encouraging it,” she said.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, California, was planning a news conference to address the ongoing conflict.

“We hope to do something that takes us into recognizing the root cause of the issue we’re dealing with, so we’re not just mourning one event after the other,” Enjy El-Kadi of the Council’s California chapter said. “We’re tired, we’re emotionally tired, and enough is enough.”
