The N.A.A.C.P., the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Representative Cori Bush of Missouri had implored Governor Parson to show mercy, saying that Mr. Williams was wrongfully convicted and that no physical evidence ties him to the crime.

“An immediate arms embargo on the far-right Israeli government is urgently needed to stop American weapons, paid for by our nation’s taxpayers, from being used in the latest slaughter in Lebanon or in the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which apparently now includes an ‘extermination zone’ in which all living beings will be subject to killing,” said Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) national deputy director Edward Ahmed Mitchell in a statement.

The footage drew condemnation Monday from the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which called for criminal charges against the officer who shoved Moukaddam.

Student activists, however, were quick to push back. SJP, with support from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Palestine Legal, filed a lawsuit against the University System of Maryland, Pines, and other university officials. The lawsuit alleges that the cancellation violates the First Amendment rights of the students by censoring their viewpoint and argues that no adequate legal basis exists to prevent the event.

After pro-Palestine demonstrations on campus in April, multiple female Muslim UT students reported to the Council on American-Islamic Relations that law enforcement removed their hijabs during their arrests and bookings.

The policy change follows legal “intervention” from CAIR after the protests. CAIR-Austin Operations Manager Shaimaa Zayan said in a press release that the group has been working with the sheriff’s office since May to “enhance understanding of Islam and build mutual respect.” Zayan declined to comment further on details about the intervention.

Since the end of May, after the Tibyan Center announced plans for the building, it has been vandalized and broken into seven times in two months, according to the Minnesota Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. CAIR officials asked law enforcement to investigate whether the incidents were motivated by bias. Additional security measures have been added to the property, according to the applicants.

Meanwhile, the Michigan chapter of Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a statement Monday calling the antisemitic allegations against Tlaib a “blatant and hateful hoax.”

CAIR stated in a press release that the issue was perpetrated “by the rightwing outlet Jewish Insider and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who have falsely claimed that Rep. Rashida Tlaib accused Nessel of prosecuting 11 anti-genocide protesters at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor because she is Jewish. Tlaib never made such a comment.”

The executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Michigan chapter, Dawud Walid, celebrated Whitmer’s comments. “We welcome Governor Whitmer declining to support the stifling of freedom of speech through prosecutions, and her verbal support that all people including anti-genocide student protesters have the right to feel safe at the University of Michigan,” he said in a statement in a news release Monday.
