CAIR-LA Welcomes Hate Crime Probe of Racist Harassment Targeting Family Displaying Palestinian Flag

The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today welcomed a hate crime investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department into a 2024 incident in which a man threatened and harassed residents of an Agoura Hills home for displaying a Palestinian flag.

In an attached bulletin, investigators tied those threats and racist statements to “a Palestinian flag displayed in an upstairs window” of the home in the 30400 block of Passageway Place.

In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:

“No one should face harassment or threats simply for displaying a flag that represents their identity or their call for justice. This alarming act is part of the broader rise in anti-Palestinian hate and Islamophobia aimed at silencing voices calling for an end to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and brutal occupation of indigenous Palestinian land.

“We must remain vigilant in opposing all forms of hate and ensure our communities can safely express their identities and stand up for justice and human rights. We commend the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for investigating this incident as a hate crime and urge full accountability for the perpetrator.”

Earlier this year, CAIR’s national office released its 2025 Civil Rights Report, “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which reveals that Islamophobia continues to be at an all-time high across the country. CAIR said viewpoint discrimination against those speaking out against genocide and apartheid was a key factor in many cases.

CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
